Employees at Northwestern Oklahoma State University were honored during the eighth annual Faculty/Staff Service Recognition Ceremony last week. Ceremonies were held at Alva and Enid locations.

Dr. Steven Maier, associate professor of physics, received the John Barton Distinguished Teaching and Service Award during the annual ceremony. Nominations are made by faculty, staff and students and the recipient is determined by a selection committee.

Linda Phillips, Northwestern-Woodward administrative assistant, was selected as the Thelma Crouch Staff Employee of the Year Award winner. This award was established to recognize exceptional performance and/or service by a member of the Northwestern staff.

Lots of schoolchildren from across the country have already signed up for a national fundraising initiative organised by Honda (UK) and the charity Greenfingers. The pupils will take part in the ‘Get Gardening for Greenfingers’ fundraising campaign in March 2012 and the organisers are calling for more schools to join in.

Pupils are sponsored to do a variety of small gardening jobs for friends and family during the week. They could sow seeds, tidy up leaves or compost kitchen scraps. The challenge is to complete 10 small tasks for £1 each. Get Gardening for Greenfingers aims to raise a minimum of £15,000 for the first ever ‘Magical Play Garden’ funded by schoolchildren. Greenfingers will build the garden at a chosen children’s hospice in the UK. Faced with a problem that cannot be ignored, budget and deadline constraints often push wellmeaning decision makers toward the fastest, cheapest fix. A quick fix treats the symptoms, but rarely addresses the underlying problem. This pattern is described by the “shifting the burden” systems archetype. Decision makers recognize a problem and see two possible courses of action. One is a symptomatic approach, which appears to be quicker and cheaper. The other is a fundamental approach, which requires more expenditure and time. Taking the quicker, cheaper route alleviates the symptoms, at least for a while. However, it also draws time, attention, and investment away from the fundamental solution. Worse, failing to tackle the fundamentals nearly guarantees that the problem will return. When it does, the reaction is to reimplement the symptomatic fix—further drawing attention and investment away from the fundamentals.

Creative Oklahoma recently announced the winners of the 2011 Great Inspirations award and two Northwestern Oklahoma State University organizations – Northwestern Art Society (NAS) and Creativity Project – were on that list. Recipients are recognized for their creative endeavors, solutions or activities.

Honorees will be recognized during a luncheon at the Oklahoma Creativity Forum Tuesday in Norman.

Each year NAS sponsors an art show open to Northwestern students, employees, retired employees and alumni. NAS was honored in its efforts to bring art to campus.
