Mighty Milers club marks National Running Day

Wednesday was National Running Day, and students in the Del Valle School District were ahead of the game.

Over the past year, students have put about 55,000 miles on their running shoes. The school district partnered with Mighty Milers, a program based out of New York teaching kids the healthy nature of running.

Tina Bazur leads the Mighty Milers at Hillcrest Elementary in Del Valle.

“You know, they come out in a 30-minute P.E. and they’re doing two-and-a-half to three miles averaging which is pretty impressive for little legs,” Bazur said.

Three years ago, Bazur signed the school up for the free incentive program through the New York Road Runners.

“The kids can come in every day and they see, you know, we ran this far this week,” she said.

Each child starts the venture with a necklace and different colored charms in the shape of feet, which are awarded to mark their progress. Medals are also awarded along the way.

“They’ll come running to me, ‘I’m done. I’m at the end of the sheet. When is my medal coming in,?’” Bazur said.

Benefits from the Mighty Milers program can be seen throughout the school. Not only are kids calmer in class after exerting energy, but they have also sharpened their math skills by calculating how many laps are equal to a mile.

Officials hope the program will lay the foundation for kids to stay active.
